Historic window love!
Do you live in a home built before 1950? Does your home still sport it’s original windows? Great! Don’t change a thing!
We can restore your windows to their original glory, preserving the character of your beautiful home. Old growth wood windows can be restored, maintaining that classic look, while at the same time, making them more energy efficient and just plain work. Once your window is restored, it’s good for decades to come!
What we do?
Pretty much anything related to your old growth wooden sashes. From simple sash cord repairs, to glazing, weatherizing, and complete restoration of rotting sashes. We can handle the job.
We don’t work on vinyl or metal replacement windows. Nor do we repair aluminum/modern storm windows.
How do we do it?
We work with you to determine what needs to be done to make your windows functional, efficient and preserved for decades to come. Often, the sashes need to be removed in order to be worked on (this isn’t as daunting as it sounds, if you know what you’re doing). Simple repairs can be done on the spot (like cord replacement/adjustment). Other repairs, like restoring rotten wood and complete re-glazing are best done in our full service shop. In that event, we would remove the sashes and secure the window opening to protect you and your house until the sashes are re-installed. Removal of the sashes is done from inside the house. We are licensed Lead-Safe Renovators and follow EPA standards to ensure a clean and safe work environment is maintained.
Why restore?
Because you’re really smart. That’s why. Seriously! Get a quote from any of the “quality” replacement window outfits. The ones that claim to sell windows with historically correct detailing will cost you up to $4,000 a unit. Yes, you can find cheaper…but…you get what you pay for. Here’s a joke for you:
“Why do they call them replacement windows?” – Because, in 10-15 years, they’ll have to be replace.
Protect the resale value of your home. Maintain the historic character of your home. Research shows that properly maintained historic windows can be just as energy efficient as replacement windows, at a fraction of the cost. This article is just one of several that illustrate this point. And, here’s 10 reasons you should restore your windows. And, because enough’s never enough, here’s a nice little tip sheet for owners of historic windows.
